Munawwar Rana, a Famous Urdu Poet Dies at the Age of 71

A Famous Urdu poet, Munawwar Rana passes away at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest on Sunday. He had been suffering from prolonged illness, getting treatment for heart-related disease and kidney issues over the past several months. According to his daughter, her father died on Sunday night at the hospital and will be laid to rest on Monday. Due to illness, he was admitted to the hospital for 14-15 days. Firstly, he was admitted to Medanta in Lucknow and later he was admitted to SGPGI where he breathed his last.

He was born on 26th November 1952 in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli. He was known for his contribution to Urdu literature and poetry, especially for his ghazals. He was recognized for his interesting poetic style when he often used Awadhi and Hindi while avoiding Arabic and Persian, which relates to the Indian audience.
Throughout his career, he received appreciation and awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poetry book ‘Shahdaba’. However, later he returned the award because of concerns over rising intolerance in the nation. Apart from this, he received several awards, such as the Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ameer Khusro Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award, Ghalib Award, and Saraswati Samaj Award.
